Kaplan is rating you against other Kaplan students, who I would say on average are probably more serious/studious than the general pool of people taking the test. I believe the score difference is due to who you are being scored against. Who is more likely to report, someone who saw a nice jump or someone who did bad on the actual exam? Regardless, I think there is something happening and I believe it is not because Kaplan makes their tests hard and wants you to feel like you have to study a ton. I am taking Kaplan and I noticed this trend as soon as I looked at the spreadsheet but I am taking it with a grain of salt. Maybe some of those scores were much earlier in their study process but there are a few people who put that they took it shortly before the actual exam. This trend holds true across the range of Kaplan scores. The Kaplan score is often ~10 points lower than what they got on the actual exam. Look at what people get on Kaplan full lengths and then the score they get on the actual exam. If you take a look at the compilation of user scores on the side, you will find a regular, large score discrepancy.
